GO TO FAQS FOR THERAPISTS

We recognize that each patient you encounter has a unique set of needs. This is why we don’t mass-produce anything, and instead encourage you and your patient to think of SIRIS™ Splints as a toolkit for creative, thoughtful, and sometimes completely original approaches to splinting. And as you think about splinting and the enormous variety and complexity of hand dysfunction we suggest you follow a few guiding principles that, in our experience, lead to success.

Be Creative. In the normal population, fingers vary considerably in shape and size. This becomes even more pronounced with trauma or chronic disease. While the splints shown in this catalog address most hand dysfunction, you will encounter situations that require something completely new. We encourage you to call or write for advice. We are experienced professionals and are eager to discuss how our flexible product line can be adapted to unique situations.

Include your Patient in Decision-making. Determine your patient’s major concerns. Are they looking to avoid surgery, normalize hand appearance, or merely alleviate pain? What activities have become difficult because of hand dysfunction and where could you provide stability to increase function? We know that this kind of involvement is something you probably do anyway. But let us underscore that in our experience, the more a patient is included in the decision making process, the greater the compliance with the therapy. This gives the patient a much-needed sense of control about something that will have a great impact on their life.

Consider Function AND Appearance. Obviously a splint that functions well will only be successful if the patient wears it. Every aspect of SIRIS™ Splints addresses both halves of the splinting equation: therapy and patient self-esteem. They are the perfect therapeutic shape as well as light weight and attractive. We use gold and silver for a host of practical reasons. They are strong and malleable, and able to withstand repeated adjustments to tighten or loosen the fit. They are hypoallergenic, easily cleaned, and can even be sterilized when used in a controlled environment. But they are also attractive to wear, encouraging patients to leave their splints on during all activities from gardening to dining at a 4-star restaurant.

Evaluate the Total Cost of Splinting. It is tempting to look at the cost of a plastic splint and compare that to the cost of a SIRIS™ Splint. But unlike other splints, SIRIS™ Splints are long-lasting. Over time this means financial savings for the patient and time savings for the therapist. One patient writes, “after wearing plastic splints for many years and finding that they only lasted a month, I’m surprised and pleased that this silver splint has lasted three-and-a-half years.” We will only add that it probably will be years longer before her splint requires any further attention.

Take Care of Your Own Hands. Occupational and physical therapists often use their own hands intensively in their work. Activities such as deep tissue massage, joint mobilization, and cutting splinting materials can lead to fatigue, pain, and overstretched ligaments. Whether you choose to use our splints to correct an existing deformity or to prevent one, we offer you a 20% discount on any order for your own use. After all, there is absolutely no better way for you to experience the value of SIRIS™ Splints.

Use the SIRIS™ Measuring Kit with Ovalsizers™.This reusable kit contains our unique Ovalsizers™ which are designed to match the patented elliptical shapes of our splints. They will help you obtain precise measurements as well as visualize how the splint will conform to your patient's finger. Our measuring kit also includes round ring sizers, order forms, photographs of representative splints on patients' hands and measuring and fitting instructions.

Need Help? Remember that we are always here to assist you. Feel free to send photographs to help us understand the needs of your patient. An experienced occupational therapist will review the materials submitted and provide advice on splint choices and measuring instructions specific to your unique situation.
